John K. Clark - Glasspainter Oakshaw Trinity Church - Text
Paisley, Scotland. 1996

The concept for this window was formed as I considered how symbolically to represent the formation, separations and amalgamations of the various churches and congregations which now form Oakshaw Trinity Church.

I realized the symbol of a fountain could be effective. A source of the water, hence, symbolically, of spiritual life and salvation.

This idea developed into what is here depicted.

At the top the symbol of the Trinity, underneath is the Holy Spirit from whom emanates light.
I have also drawn the Holy Spirit as the source of the water which, along with the light, represents the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
The tongues of fire evoke Pentecost when the apostles first received the Holy Spirit.
The light as it emanates from the Holy Spirit is constant and even and represents truth and clarity.
The water representing faith flows from vessel to vessel indicating in this case the changes and movements during and since the Disruption within the congregations. This is entirely symbolic and cannot represent the actual separations and re-groupings which took place.
In the background I have made a profile of each of the churches.

The fractured quality of the light in the lower half of the window is also used to symbolize the Disruption.
The other symbols which I have employed are to emphasize the tenets of all the branches of the Faith.
The Bible, the water itself representing Baptism, the wheat and grapes representing the Communion.
