This project was undertaken in 1987.
The project was as a result of a fire in the church which left the windows still intact
but every section was crazed with heat fractures.
Replacement windows were to be installed. The original windows were a simple geometric
diamond quarry pattern which was painted with a very crude stylized floral design in
brown glass paint with some silver stain.
I quoted to replace the windows as they were but suggested to the Revd. John Sim that the windows
were not worth replacing and that I could design something more interesting for not too much more
money.
The brief was drawn up incorporating my suggestion that the theme include fire.
I asked for guidance from the church to find suitable images. Following on from these discussions,
I concluded that I should use two themes from the Old Testament - Moses and two from the
New Testament - Pentecost. One in each double lancet.
Designing these took a considerable period of time. I referred to illuminated manuscripts in the
Book of Hours for influence as I wanted to have a medieval feel to the design. I also took into
consideration the William Morris windows at the other end of the church in terms of composition and
placing of the figures.
I have approached this using a pre - renaissance concept of composition where the more important
features in a window occupy a greater area than the less important, an example being the relation
of the figure to the sheep. The flames being the most important element throughout. The mountain
and the table are barely suggested.
The background builds up a rhythm into which the other elements are placed and combined.
The rhythm is both linear and tonal and is enhanced by the colour.
The lancets show;
Moses and the Burning Bush. Sheep grazing below.
Moses and the pillar of Fire. Golden calf below.
Above the symbol of the phoenix. This symbolizes the old testament, the resurrection and the
creation of something new from the ashes of the old.
Apostles and the fire of the Holy Spirit and light of wisdom

Above is a dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit.
