John K. Clark - Glasspainter Sir Alexander Stone Memorial Window - Explanation
Explanation

The project is to act as a memorial to Sir Alexander Stone. It was decided that the library would be a suitable location and this concept has been developed to suit that location.

The windows have been made using a method called fusing or slumping which is basically melting glass into a form. One benefit of this approach is that it is possible to make a large work that will have a major impact on the interior of the room adding a level of visual interest and excitement without diminishing the natural light source.

The quotations that we have chosen are very varied and try to reflect the history and changing philosophy of the school in an unusual and modern way. They are not dry and boring facts and figure but are a mixture of and interesting and sometimes quite humorous texts edited to suit this format. They also indicate the changes uses of language over the 3 hundred years.

The quotations will not immediately readable, the text is allowed to break in the middle of words. In a sense, the message of the quotation is only half of the point of the work.

The panels should be seen as a continuous work running the full length of the library, an abstract set of changing shapes and planes.

The way I have drawn the letters to fill the grid using the whole space available for both upper and lower case letters will create very interesting and exciting visual patterns on different layers. I have tried to indicate this in the slide show following the making of this work.
