The Brief
There was no specific brief for this project.
The work should be atmospheric, spiritual and poetic rather than directly religious in content.
The content and concept behind this work came about through discussions with a select committee made up of the Minister and several members of the congregation.
The Concept
I found that in the discussions with the church members the symbolism led me to think in terms of a local Creation Window. I have therefore treated the three sections as belonging to one overall concept. The circular window has a dynamic of its own which I have increased.
The two lower windows which can be viewed from quite close contain local themes and images personal to the donor.
Seeing the group as a whole there is a drift through the spectrum of colours
The symbolism
The centre window
The sky and the sea, the sun and moon, a flight of geese and gulls.
The right hand window.
A local view of the sea from the dunes. Fish in the water, buckthorn on the dunes, oyster catchers flying through.
The left hand window.
Oak, willow, apple, brambles, mint, local orchids, poppies, violets, primroses, barley, a lark, sheep grazing, a dove symbolizing the holy spirit and hands praying representing humanity.
Techniques
The windows will be made using traditional stained glass techniques. Flashed antique glass will be used throughout the windows, this will be extensively etched, painted and silver-stained where required. The windows will be leaded in the traditional manner and installed in the existing structure. The panels will be reinforced using stainless steel rods and reinforced leading in the circular window.
It is proposed that the windows be protected from the ouside using a wired glass.
