John K. Clark - Glasspainter St Mary's Church - Blyth - Text

DESIGN BRIEF

This was the text that I originally recieved. I visited the church and spoke with the committee and a fuller theme was discussed and agreed. It is interesting however, to see how a a project and idea develops.

Brief

We are looking for design (representational) from the wording in the Millennium

Logo:- CHRIST YESTERDAY TODAY FOREVER

It is envisaged that the window would incorporate Creation, the Dominical sacraments (Baptism and the Eucharist) and the beauty and glory of Heaven.

Creation - the Spirit of God moved across the waters (Genesis 1) - The themes of water and the Spirit of God continuing in Baptism and our Lord always present in the sacrament of the Eucharist and Christ Forever in the Glory of Heaven.

CONCEPT

The design shown in this site and the text below is my response to this brief and following on from the meetings in the church when the project was discussed. At an early stage in the design process I like to show drawings of my concepts and to discuss these with the people involved before a final sketch design is made and presented.

The design should be read from left to right. As is typical in my work I have not allowed any part of the imagery to pass behind the stonework.

The themes contained are as follows.

  1. The Spirit hovering over the waters and the creation of light, the separation of light from darkness and the creation and separation of the waters above and below the firmament. In the same window is a continuation of the theme of Spirit an water in the theme the Baptism of Christ with the dove descending and Christ represented by the lamb.
  2. The second panel contains symbols from the life and works of Christ beginning with the Marriage at Cana and the transformation of the water into wine. Below is a representation of the meeting at the well with the Samaritan Woman and therefore the "Water of Life" theme. The lower part of this panel represents the "miraculous draught of fishes" theme.
  3. In the third panel are two themes from the Passion of Christ. The Last Supper and the Agony in the Garden. The last supper is represented by a table containing one large bowl or plate surrounded by 12 smaller plates with one outside the established pattern . There is also the paschal lamb again representing the person of Christ. The hands holding the bread and cup of wine represent Christ. The clasped hands in the upper part of the window emerging from the palm branches and hands holding the cup above represent the prayer of Christ in the garden of Gethsemane.
  4. The final window contains two concepts representing the future and continuity of the Church. Pentecost and the tongue of fire as the Spirit descended on the apostles. Also contained here is the sense of the "mighty driving wind" and also the concept of "wind blows where it wills" The fountain with the doves drinking from it represents both baptism and faith. The Eucharist is symbolised by the wheat and grapes.

The windows will be made using flashed antique glass throughout. In order to create such images and forms extensive acid etching will be required. The glass painting will be carried out using traditional glass paints and silver stain.
