The brief for the design of this window originated at a meeting early in 1986 between Mrs Shaw, the The Revd. Johnson McKay, the then Minister of the Abbey and myself.
We came to the conclusion that the theme of the design should be "light and music" with the dominant colours being violets, blues, and pinks.

A design was presented and accepted.

In 1987, coordination of the fund raising for the window was taken over by Mr James Wardrop.
At this stage, I decided to re-work the design it now being two years old.
A new design was submitted and accepted.

The window was made possible by donations from Balfour Kilpatrick, The Society of Friends of Paisley Abbey, various societies, and individuals.

My approach to designing this work was firstly, to find the symbols I would like to use and set these harmoniously within a basic rhythmic pattern.
All the images are like musical forms, emerging from this sense of rhythm, the images being neither solid nor real but manifestations.

The musical influences were the St Matthew Passion, plainsong and Psalm 150 verse 3 & 4.

The symbolism used is mainly standard Christian Symbolism.

I always design with regard to the framework into which the window is to be installed. In this case the framework is made of stone with broad mullions and a strong tracery. The composition of the design therefore is partly governed by this structure so that essentially, each section is self contained and could stand alone.
